Mortdecai (2015) Review

The truth is nice, but a rumour’s priceless.

The good:

  • Stylish cinematography like transitions
  • Themed outfits and music
  • Johnny Depp’s English accent on top form

The bad:

  • They made him a wet wipe in front of his bossy wife

You’ll like this if:

  • You like Pirates of the Caribbean or Jim Carrey’s Dr Eggman

Charismatic British aristocrat and part-time shady art dealer Charlie Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) searches for a stolen painting that’s being hunted by a terrorist for mysterious reasons.

The story of this is inconsequential, as with most one-man comedies (Austin Powers, Ace Ventura). It’s an excuse for Johnny Depp to gallivant through comedic situations doing his best impression of Downton Abbey.

Bonus: Gwyneth Paltrow’s there too!

This is Johnny Depp at his best. He plays up the English lord character with relish and the script gives him just enough funny words to make viewers laugh out loud.

This is genuinely funnier than all the Pirates of the Caribbean films, and one definitely worth watching when you’re in the mood for a giggle.
